The Sorrento Gulls substitute, Jack Slater scores the only goal with his first touch against Western Knights to have the Gulls progress to the fourth round of the FFA Cup. This match was a replay of the 2017 Final where Knights won 1-0.
A sunny cloudless sky at 31 degrees with no breeze making it warm for players, but so pleasant for spectators at the Knight’s venue. A good surface on the small pitch for the 3pm kick off. Western Knights Captain, Graham Tough called correctly the toss of the coin by referee Tom Glavovic and asked Gulls Captain, Daryl Platten to attack the Victoria Road (southern) end goal.
It was bland football at the start from both teams with both keepers collecting poor crosses, both teams striving to set their rhythm, but hindered by the narrow pitch. The Knights wide men start to launch better crosses, but those missed by Keeper Morgan were dealt with by the Gulls defenders.
The Gulls best chance came on 26 minutes when Cameron Teece’s free kick curled the wrong side at the foot of the right post.
The play at the start of the second half was not an improvement. Then on 60 minutes Godwin Darkwa was clear for the Gulls and one on one with Keeper Sam Stone. But the New Zealander’s shot cannoned off the body of Stone as the keeper blocked low. 8 minutes later Reece Vittiglia crossed from the right for the team in blue and it reached the far post where the unmarked Jordan Roberts should have done better that heading across and wide. Then on 75 minutes it was Daryl Platten who crossed from the right for the Gulls, into Reece Vittiglia, but his shot was wide of the left post.
A minute later at the other end Josh Cortez ran down the left and cut inside and from 22 metres hammered a shot that went just high of the right junction of the goal for the team in red.
At 80 minutes Vittiglia turned and shot from just outside the Knights area, but the shot was deflected over. Darkwa took the resultant corner from the right and it reached Roberts again at the far post but he snatched his shot over.
Jack Slater had just been introduced by Gulls Coach, Jamie Harnwell and he became the hero. First it was Darkwa’s shot that was blocked by a mass of defenders, then Robert’s effort was also blocked, but the ball came to Salter who fired high into the net to break the deadlock.
The goal deflated the hard running Knights and the Gulls played out till the end after 4 minutes of stoppage time.
The Gulls now wait for the draw on the 5th round on Tuesday, 3rd April. Whereas the Knights prepare for the start of their Division 1 league season.
